Boardman - Dorothy (Dot) Marie Velker, 84, of Boardman, died Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
Dorothy was born December 29, 1930 in Youngstown, a daughter of Randall and Mary Poponyak Booth.
A 1947 graduate of Chaney High School, Dorothy received her Diploma in Nursing from Youngstown Hospital Association and attended Youngstown College. Dorothy worked as a registered nurse at Northside Hospital for 44 years. She retired in 1996. Dorothy was an advocate of nursing and an advocate for patients. She maintained close relationships with her many nursing colleagues.
When not nursing, Dorothy was always taking care of others. Her family and friends enjoyed receiving her care packages of cookies, cards and gifts. Dorothy loved music and dancing and enjoyed concerts at the Packard Music Hall. She loved the annual vacations to Oak Island, NC with her family. Her favorite time at the beach was at 5PM when the sun was just setting. Reading a good book was a favorite activity. Dorothy will always be remembered as a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She particularly enjoyed watching her grandchildren excel in academic achievement and sporting events. She was a true mid-westerner, pragmatic, friendly, and generous of herself; she lived her life by the Golden Rule.
Dorothy was a member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon, Elder, Medical Missionary and representative of Eastminster Presbytery. Additionally, she was a member of the Christian Women's Association, Oldsters of Youngstown Hospital Association, Senior Circle at Northside Hospital, Red Hats Association, Ohio Cultural Alliance, Conversation Salon at the Poland Library and Friends of the Boardman Library, and the Boardman YMCA. She served on the Board of Youngstown State University I.L.R. and Canfield AARP #3104 for medical information. Dorothy was a loyal volunteer for Hospice of the Valley where she served for over 20 years.
Dorothy leaves her husband of 58 years, John "Jack" Velker, whom she married May 18, 1957; two daughters, Penny (Andrew) Johnson of Hinsdale, IL, and Trisha (Bill) Custer of Poland; two sons, John (Stephanie) Velker of Aliso Viejo, CA, and Mark (Lisa) Velker of Canfield; sister, Dr. Patricia (Richard) Levenberg of San Francisco, CA; ten grandchildren Jacob, Noah, Aaron, Lyndsey, Derek, Jaclyn, Sydney, Seth, Zack, and Luke; ;brother-in-law, Dennis Porter of Enid, OK; nieces and nephews, Joshua Levenberg, Amanda Levenberg, Dr. Wrenn Levenberg, Matt Porter, Peter Porter, and Mary Porter; and an uncle, John Poponyak.
Besides her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Polly Porter and nephew, Paul Porter.
May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, and may the sun shine warm upon your face, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
Mom you will be truly missed.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Canfield Presbyterian Church.
Family and friends may visit Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
