Dorothy R. Novotny, 78
YOUNGSTOWN - Dorothy R. Novotny, 78, formerly of Struthers, died Saturday morning, Aug. 15, 2009, at Park Vista.
Miss Novotny was born Nov. 13, 1930 in Struthers, a daughter of John and Katherine Skokan Novotny.
She was a 1949 graduate of Struthers High School, a 1952 graduate of Youngstown Hospital Association School of Nursing and a 1962 graduate of the University of Nebraska, where she received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
Miss Novotny was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church. Miss Novotny worked as a nurse for the United States Air Force, for over 20 years, and was honorably discharged in 1979 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
She worked as an operating room nurse for the Youngstown Hospital Association, a flight nurse and an operating room nurse stationed in Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan. Miss Novotny received a Meritorious Service Award for launch site support for the United States manned space programs Gemini and Apollo and the Joint Service Commendation Medal for meritorious service as Chief Nurse ARMISH-MAAG Hospital, headquarters United States Military Mission with the Imperial Iranian Army and the United States Military Assistance Advisory Group to Iran. She was a member of the Society of Air force Nurses, the Aerospace Medical Association, the New Mexico Public Health Association, and past president of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
She is survived by three sisters, Elizabeth Rosse of Hillsville, Irene Kollar of Boardman and Mary Mehley of Struthers and one brother, Michael Novotny of Youngstown.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, John Novotny, Joseph Novotny and James Novotny and four sisters, Margaret Hudock, Anne Sussman, Mary Novotny, and Helen Boccio.
Panachida services will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.
Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher Burke and Rev. Msgr. Alexis Mihalik officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Lowellville.
