Youngstown - Dorothy "Violet" Lewis, 91, formerly of Poland Ave. in Struthers, died Saturday afternoon, December 17, 2011 at the Hospice House.
Mrs. Lewis, affectionately known as "Violet" was born August 10, 1920 in Vandergrift, PA, a daughter of Cyrus Gongaware and Rosa (Ashbaugh) Lookabaugh. She came to Youngstown in 1925 and then moved to Struthers in 1942. For the past 19 years, she has lived with her daughter in Youngstown.
She was a 1938 graduate of South High School. Mrs. Lewis worked for the Ravenna Arsenal, during World War II and later at the former Hume's Furniture for several years.
She was a wonderful homemaker and noted for her excellent cooking and baking. Mrs. Lewis loved making Christmas ornaments, doing bead work, and crocheting, sharing all of her beautiful creations with her family and friends.
She was a former member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Boardman for many years, where she sang in the choir, was active in the Sunday School Class, a member of the Altar Guild and its Senior Citizens. She enjoyed attending Bible Study Group at both St. Mark's Lutheran Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church. In more recent years, she has been a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. Mrs. Lewis was also a member of the Newport Garden Club and served as a past president of the club.
Her husband, Louis Lewis, whom she married June 21, 1947, died May 22, 1984. She leaves three daughters, Verda (George) Scott of Youngstown, Elsie Harris of Struthers, and Jane Lewis of Boardman; son, Thomas (Judy) Metzler, Sr. of Centerville, TX; eight grandchildren; Thomas (Chrissy) Metzler Jr., Jay Metzler, Shawn (Shannon) Metzler, George (Jennifer) Scott Jr., Carole (Mike) Scott Sharp, Jeffrey Scott, Walter Harris Jr., and Lynn Harris Leinhos; eight great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Kate.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Luvelva Homan; and four brothers, Carl, Russell, Keith, and Cecil Gongaware.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Quaintance officiating. Interment will be at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers and Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Lewis' name to the memorial fund of Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman, Ohio 44512.
