Dorothy Burns Gough

Boardman - Dorothy Burns Gough, 92, of Beeghly Oaks, formerly of Poland, died Wednesday afternoon at the nursing home.

Dorothy was born October 11, 1918 in Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter of Joseph and Myral Anderson Burns. She was raised in Avalon, Pa., and came to this area in 1941.

A1937 graduate of Avalon High School, Dorothy received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Upper Iowa University in 1941 and her Masters in Guidance and Student Personnel from Youngstown State University in 1972. She taught English at Cheney High School and in 1954 taught for the Struthers City Schools. She retired in 1976 from the Struthers High School Home Economics Department after 23 years of service.

Dorothy was a member of the Struthers Retired Teachers Association and Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities. She was a former board member of Youngstown Hearing and Speech, Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Hotel Restoration Committee at Lakeside, Ohio where she served as secretary. She was a charter member of the Poland Women's Club, a member of the Struthers Study Club, the Struthers Jr. Reading Circle, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mahoning Chapter, and the JAl Pateokee Chapter in Stewart Fl. Dorothy served on the Council for Exceptional Children, was President of the Family Association at the Martha Lloyd School, and was a Special Olympic Sponsor. Dorothy was a member of the Poland United Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, John Wilson Gough whom she married December 27, 1943 died February 19, 1993. She leaves her daughter, Jean Wilson Gough of Troy, PA; her son, Edward Wilson Gough of Poland; one sister, Myral Thomas of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and one brother, Joseph Burns of Mercer, PA.

Besides her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Charles Wilson Gough; and three sisters, Mary Borek, Margaret Kroll, and Elizabeth Hadar.

Funeral services will be held at Saturday, 11:00 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, with Rev. Gerald Fennel officiating.

Friends will be received Saturday from 9:45 AM until 10:45 AM at the funeral home.
