Dorothy Jean Cooper, 81, passed Sunday evening, October 2, 2016 at Beeghly Oaks, surrounded by her family.
Dorothy was born July 19, 1935 in Youngstown, a daughter Harry C. and Edna M. Morse Jacobson.
Raised in Struthers, Dorothy was a graduate of Struthers High School and attended Youngstown College of Business. She married her grade school sweetheart, John "Jack" G Cooper on October 9, 1954. In 1959, they moved to Poland, where they would make their home and raise their four children. Dorothy took great pride in being a dedicated homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will always be remembered as being nurturing, generous, patient, loving, and a great teacher.
Dorothy was a former member of the Poland Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and taught second grade Sunday School. More recently, she was a member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church and its Worship and Music Committee. She was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary and served as a Den Mother and Baseball Mom, while her children were growing up. One of Dorothy's passions was quilting and she spent many hours building a collection, which will be cherished and passed down through her family. She belonged to several quilting guilds over the years.
Her husband Jack of 54 years preceded her in death on July 23, 2009. She is survived by two sons, John (Suzanne) Cooper Jr. and Daniel Cooper, all of Poland; two daughters, Terri Luzik of Byron, GA and Dawna Cooper of Poland; eleven grandchildren, Ben (Kate), Cody, Jessie, Abbey, Clay, Jennie (Tommy), Sarah, Matt (Christi), Betsy, Tom, Hannah (Joseph); and six great-grandchildren, Zayli, Jhordin, Nathan, Dixie, Lilly, and Callie.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a brother, Harry W. Jacobson; and her sister, Betty M. Symbolik.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring Street.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Dorothy's name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, Ohio 44512.
