Dorothy Christina Bode
Dorothy Christina Bode (95) of Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home, Niles, Ohio is now at peace with the Lord as of January 29, 2014. She previously lived at Shepherd of the Valley Assisted Living in Poland, Ohio for 13 years and before that in North Lima, Ohio.
Dorothy was born on August 15, 1918, the daughter of Christian and Christina Weber Bode, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Albert, Christian, Frederick, Herman, Henry, Rose, George and William and her nephew Tom Bode.
Dorothy was a 1936 graduate of South High School and a 1940 graduate of Youngstown College with a degree in elementary education. She began her teaching career in Orwell, Ohio. After teaching there for a year, she began teaching in the Youngstown City School System at Stambaugh School. Over the years she mentored many student teachers in her classrooms. She spent the 1958-1959 school year as a teacher's mentor, working out of the district's central office, helping new teachers develop their teaching skills. The following year she transferred to Jackson Elementary School on the city's south side. She taught as Jackson as a first grade teacher until she retired in 1984, having taught a total of 43 years, often teaching children and grandchildren of her former students.
Dorothy was a member of Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women and the Youngstown Education Association.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Pilgrim Collegiate Church (formerly First Reformed Church, now Faith Community Covenant Church) where she served on the Church Council, Board of Christian Education and was a member of the Women's Fellowship. She also taught Sunday school having multiple generations of children from families and she served as the Director of the Nursery.
During the summer and in her retirement Dorothy traveled the world. She loved finding small treasures and sending her nieces and nephews post cards telling about the adventures she was having in Africa, Japan, Russia, India, China, Poland or the USA. Her last trip was to the Holy Land. Dorothy took many photographs while traveling and made travel photo albums.
When she was 93, Dorothy participated in the Second Wind Dream project sponsored by Shepherd of the Valley. She visited a preschool class and read to the children.
She leaves behind 7 nieces and 3 nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and numerous great, great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank those who cared for Dorothy in presence or spirit. Friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 22 at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio 44512. A memorial service honoring Dorothy's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Mike Zabel of Faith Community Covenant Church. Burial took place was at Lake Park Cemetery,
