Struthers - Doris Jean Whiteside, passed away Sunday evening, January 14, 2018 with her family at her side after a brief illness. Doris' heart grew tired and she was ready to rest.
Doris was born October 27, 1931 in Youngstown, a daughter of George and Rose Parrish Whiteside. She was one of six children.
Raised in Youngstown, Doris attended East High School until her parents moved to the Southside of Youngstown. Not wanting to graduate from South High School, Doris and a girl friend moved to Hollywood, California where she graduated from Hollywood High School in 1950. She received her cosmetology license and was employed at Turner Hall Corporation, a cosmetic company based out of New York City. For over 22 years Doris traveled the country teaching beauticians how to use their products.
Throughout her career with Turner Hall she maintained her home on Garfield Street in Struthers. In 1973 she returned to the area and was employed at ITT Grinell in Warren and later as a store manager at Hot Sam's at the Eastwood Mall.
Doris loved to collect coins and spent hours a day pouring over them with her oversized magnifying glass. However, her greatest passion was her family. She treasured her time with her siblings and their families. Doris spent many years organizing the Parrish family reunion where all her favorite people were gathered in one place. Surrounded by family, nothing made her happier than the summer vacations, holiday and birthday parties and time spent on the back porch watching her great nieces and nephews play.
Doris will be remembered for her feisty personality, kind heart, love of children and her desire to always do things her way. Though Doris had no biological children of her own, she was a mom and grandma to many.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her three sisters, Evelyn (James) Osborne of Boardman, Rosemarie Fisher of McDonald and Gwen (Jeff) Pantall with whom she made her home for the last 15 years in Struthers; sister-in-law, Mary Whiteside of Fayetteville; and nineteen loving nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her brothers, George (Dee) and Kenneth Whiteside; her brother-in-law, Lloyd Fisher; and her nephew Brian Fisher.
Friends will be received Friday from 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM followed by a service celebrating her life at 6:00 PM at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home with Deacon John Terranova officiating. Doris's family will host a dinner following the service at the Becker Family Center. Doris will be interred at Lake Park Cemetery.
Doris' family would like to thank the kind and compassionate care Doris received in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman.
