Doris Carroll Rice

Poland - Doris Carroll Rice, 94, of Poland, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at the Hampton Woods Nursing Center in Poland, Ohio. 

Born June 5, 1930 and raised in New Cumberland, West Virginia by Donald and Mary Carroll Stewart.

Doris was a graduate of New Cumberland High School in West Virginia. Doris went on to attend West Virginia University and graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. It was one summer that she met the love of her life, John, while working as a lifeguard at Tomlinson Run State Park. Their love blossomed for 60 years until John's passing in 2011. 

She worked as a librarian for the Poland School district, expressing a sweet smile to each student, retiring after 20 years. One who was devoted to her Christian faith, Doris held the positions of both Elder and Deacon at the Poland Presbyterian Church. You could often find her ringing bells in the choir or working countless hours volunteering for church events. She was a member of the Poland Garden Club and enjoyed sharing her love at the homeless shelter. 

In her spare time, she loved traveling with John and their friends around the world, taking many cruises and road trips, and spending summer vacations with her family at Long Beach, NC. She enjoyed listening to all things John Denver and was proud of her West Virginian roots. Above all, she cherished her time with her family, being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 

Doris is survived by her children, Janice (Steve) Epstein of Akron, OH, Julie (John) Miles of Wilmington, NC, Tony (Jane) Congelio of Poland, OH, and Tim Rice; grandchildren, Cara (Josh), Collin (Jessica), Allison, John, Lindsay, Megan, Kerrie, and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Lyla, Ensley, Charlotte, and Isabel; and sister-in-law, Janet Stewart, of Canton, OH. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Stewart.

An hour of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor, Poland, OH 44514.

She will be laid to rest next to her husband in a private ceremony at Locust Hill Cemetery, West Virginia.
