Poland- Doris F. Lancy, 73, of Poland, died Sunday afternoon at her residence.

Doris was born April 4, 1936 in Bessemer, PA, a daughter of Andrew and Jennie Slapnichar Tonya. She was raised in Bessemer and moved to this area in 1958.

She was a 1954 graduate of Bessemer High School and received her Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in education from Youngstown State University. Doris taught both 7th and 8th grade at Struthers City Schools for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. She then continued to work for Struthers City Schools with the St. Nicholas Title Program for 13 years. During her years at Struthers City Schools, she was involved with the Struthers High School Girls Basketball teams for over 30 years and was the announcer for the Struthers Track Team.

Doris was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Mary's Rosary Society, the Golden Pillars and St. Mary's Assumption Center Cookie Committee. She was a member of the GCU Lodge 164, OEA, NEA, Mahoning County Retired Teachers Assoc., and Kappa Delta Phi. Doris enjoyed bocce and played for the Mount Carmel Women's Bocce League, Judge Lanzo Team, and for St. Anthony's Bocce League. She was a member of the Bessemer Croatian Club and the Bessemer All Class Reunion Committee. Doris enjoyed traveling and was a tour guide for Classic Heritage Tour's annual New York City Trip.

Besides her husband, Edward D. Lancy Sr., whom she married October 4, 1958, she leaves her son, Dr. Edward D. (Gidget) Lancy Jr. of Struthers; daughters, Sherri (Tom) Jarvie of Chagrin Falls, and Janet (Ken) George of Struthers; sisters, Frances Juran of Sun Lakes, AZ and Amelia (Frank) Deniakis of FL; brothers, Joseph (Ann) Tonya of New Middletown, Michael (Margaret) Tonya of Cummings, GA, and Paul (Joanne) Tonya of Beaver Falls; six grandchildren, Sabrina and Ryan Lancy, Shane and Brooke Jarvie, and Kory and Kyle George; and numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Edward Juran.

Services will be held Friday, 9:45 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Parastas will be conducted at 3:15 p.m. with the Rosary following.
