Austintown - Donald R. Simpkins, 87, formerly of Poland, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2017 in the comfort of his home. He was born on April 19, 1929 in Pittsburgh, son of the late Harry and Edith Scull Hann.
Don was a 1948 graduate of Struthers High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1948-1952. He was employed in Inventory Control with Youngstown Sheet & Tube for 25 years and also worked as the head custodian at Poland School District. He was a member of Poland United Methodist Church where he was head usher for many years, American Legion Post #15 in Poland, where he was also past Commander and was a scout leader with Troop #2 in Poland. Don enjoyed traveling, and going to the Southern Park Mall with his wife.
He leaves his daughter, Kathleen Joyce of New Springfield; son, John (Karen) Simpkins of Austintown; grandchildren, Corey Vukovich, Thomas Joyce and Tanner Joyce; two step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren and his special friend, Carol Queen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Leona M. Simpkins on December 11, 2010.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11am at Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman-Poland Rd., with Pastor Susan Holley officiating. Interment will follow in Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St. Poland, and prior to the service from 10-10:45am at the church.
The family asks that any memorial donations be made, in his name, to Poland United Methodist Church.
