Poland - Donald L. "Smokey" Hull, 90, died early Friday morning, March 2, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Don was born June 6, 1927 in Johnetta, PA, a son of Edward and Olive Myers Hull.
Raised in Struthers, he attended Struthers High School, until being drafted into the United States Army in August of 1945. He was discharged in December of 1946 and then reenlisted in November of 1949. In August of 1952, he was transferred to the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in October of 1956, with the rank of Sergeant.
Returning to the area after his military service, Mr. Hull worked as a railroader for Erie Railroad and later for Conrail. In the mid 80's, Conrail relocated him to Elizabethville, PA, where he worked until retiring in 1988. In 2014, he returned to the Youngstown area to be closer to family.
He was a member of the VFW in Struthers and Elizabethville and belonged to the Railroad Bowling League. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, tending to his fruit and vegetable gardens, and couple roller skating weekly while living in Elizabethville.
Don is survived by his two daughters, Vicki (Ken) Toth of Poland and Donna (Mary Jean Boone) Hull of Powell; sister, Barbara Ciccone of Struthers; two grandchildren, Kenneth Toth, Jr. of Poland and Jessica Toth of Columbus; former wife and mother of his children, Letitia Hull of Youngstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife the former Mary Lou Geyer; sister, Wanda Eisenbrei; and brother, Raymond Hull.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street, Boardman, where family and friends will be received on Sunday from 2-3:45 p.m., prior to the service.
The family would like to thank the Inn at Poland Way and its staff, Dr. Zeno, and the 5W staff of St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center for the wonderful care they gave to Don.
