Boardman - Donald Harold Hornickle, 88, of Boardman, died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at his residence.
Don was born June 13, 1928 in Youngstown, a son of the late Mahlon and Genevieve William Hornickle.
Raised in Youngstown, Don was a 1946 graduate of East High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Youngstown College and his Masters Degree in Education from Westminster College in New Wilmington. Don's first teaching position was with Hubbard Village Schools from September 1950 until December 7, 1950 when he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. For two years he served stateside as a radio repair instructor. After being honorably discharged, Don returned to the Youngstown area and taught Junior and Senior High at Youngstown City schools. In 1960 he served as Secondary Administrator for Youngstown City Schools and in 1968 took the position as Principal for West Branch high School. In 1970 Don accepted the position of Secondary Schools Supervisor for Columbiana County Schools until becoming Superintendent of Springfield Local Schools in 1978. He retired in 1986.
Don was a member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association Chapter where he served as Legislative Committee member, chairman, Eastern Area vice-president and president. He also served on the Mahoning Retired Teachers Association where he served as Legislative Committtee member, Chairman, President and Trustee. Don also served on the American Association of Retired Teachers State Legislative Committee for six years and was Chairman for five years. He was an active member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) where he served on it's legislative committee. Don was a member of Phi Delta Kappa for 56 years.
Don was a long time member of Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and served on three mission trips to the Caribbean, twice to Dominica and once to St. Kitts.
Don leaves his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Zimmerman whom he married January 7, 1956; one son, John Hornickle of Vancouver, WA; one daughter, Brenda (Larry Lawrence) Hornickle of Lakeland, FL; one granddaughter Katrina (Ryan Wolff) Lawrence-Wolff; and one great-grandson, Hunter Wolff.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Kelsey Orosan officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery.
Friends will be received Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. at church.
