Poland- Dominick Melidona, 89, of 1852 Massachusetts, died Tuesday morning at Jameson Hospital in New Castle. Mr. Melidona was born November 24, 1914, in Niagara Falls, New York, a son of Frank and Grace Scrufari Melidona. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated from Jefferson High School. In 1950 he returned to this area and to Girard, and also resided in Liberty Township and New Middletown before moving to Poland one year ago. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II serving as Master Sergeant, in airplane maintenance. He received the American Defense Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre with four Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Ribbon and served in the Air Offensive Japan, Central Pacific, and Eastern Nandates Western Pacific Theaters. A mechanic by trade, Mr. Melidona was an instructor of auto mechanics at the Mahoning County Joint Vocational School, retiring in 1985 after 15 years. For 33 years he was choir director for the First Christian Assembly in Liberty where he also served as Royal Ranger Leader and played the clarinet. He attended Calvary Assembly of God in Boardman. During his free time he enjoyed automotive restoration repair. Most importantly, he dearly loved his grandchildren, they were his life. Besides his wife the former Nancy Sapone, whom he married December 6, 1958 he leaves two sons, Dr. Frank J. (Madeline) Melidona of Poland, and Rev. Paul A. (Franca) Melidona of Montreal, Canada; and four grandchildren, Myriam and Joel Timothy Melidona and David and Danielle Melidona. Besides his parents, two sisters, Rev. Jennie Lombardo, and Eunice Melidona; and one brother, Anthony Melidona preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Saturday, 10:00 AM at the Calvary Assembly in Boardman. Friends may call Friday from 5-8 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Saturday from 9:00 -9:45 AM in church.
