Lowellville - Despena Dickson, 80, died Wednesday morning, July 20, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Despena, affectionately known by many as "Peda," was born February 6, 1936 in Erie, PA, a daughter of Lambros and Rose Shingle Sambles, and came to Youngstown as an infant.
She attended South High and worked in housekeeping at Woodside Receiving Hospital for ten years and was a dedicated homemaker.
Some of her favorite pastimes included gardening, traveling with her husband, and visiting casinos.
Her husband, Robert H. Dickson, whom she married January 5, 1955, preceded her in death on June 1, 2003. She is survived by two daughters, Rosemary (William) Balash of Youngstown and MaryAnn (Chris) Colucci of Boardman; three sons, Robert (Mary Jo) Dickson of Youngstown, Raymond Dickson of Lowellville, and David (Diane) Dickson of Austintown; brother, Richard Sambles of Boardman; sister-in-law, Rosemary Hegedusich of Buffalo, NY; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one on the way; two nephews; and one niece.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Marie Grazier; sister-in-law, Frances Sambles; and niece, Jenny Hegedusich.
Per her request, there will be no calling hours or services.
The family would like to thank Dr. Santuccio Ricciardi, the staff of Maplecrest Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, and the emergency room staff of St. Elizabeth Health Center Main Campus for the kindness and wonderful care Mrs. Dickson received.
