Struthers - Daniel L. Thomas, Sr., 85, of Struthers, died peacefully Friday evening, June 3, 2011 at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
Mr. Thomas was born April 10, 1926 in Struthers, a son of Stephen and Mary Fiorito DiTommaso.
A lifelong resident of Struthers, he was a June 1945 graduate of Struthers High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II. Upon returning from the war, he was introduced into the dry cleaning business and became co-owner and operator of Crystal Clear Dry Cleaning on Glenwood Ave. in Youngstown, until his retirement in 2005.
Mr. Thomas was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers and the American Legion Post No. 158. In his spare time, you could find him on the golf course. He was a scratch golfer and got two hole-in-ones. For many years, he was a member of the Vindicator Golf League and the Lowellville Golf League. A devoted family man, he enjoyed spending time with his entire family and attending his grandsons athletic events.
He leaves his wife, the former Elizabeth Ann "Lee Bee" Franceschelli, whom he married August 11, 1951; three sons, Danny (Michele) Thomas, Jr., Michael Thomas, and Rick Thomas, all of Struthers; sister, Margaret (Richard) Holmes of Youngstown; brother, Louis "Red" Thomas of Youngstown; four grandsons, Dan (Amanda) Thomas, III of Kent, Dylan Thomas and Matt Thomas, both of Struthers, and Rick Thomas, Jr. of Tampa, FL.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nicolina Sovick and a brother, Michael Thomas.
A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Bernard Gaeta officiating. Entombment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. Thomas' name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, Ohio 44512.
Mr. Thomas' family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to his hospice nurses, Kelly Durner and Kim West, for their wonderful care and comfort given to both Dan and his family.
