Poland - Daniel Ray Smith, 84, of Poland, died early Friday morning at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Dan was born March 25, 1924 in Youngstown, a son of Daniel and Media Ipe Smith. A 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Dan enlisted in the United States Air Force serving during World War II from October 1942 until February 1946. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for C. Bode Inc., for 25 years and then became self employed specializing in home remodeling, wood working, and home repairs. Dan was an active member of the Faith Community Church, serving in many capacities including Deacon, Elder Emeritus, president of the congregation and head of the building committee where he was instrumental in the 1964 addition to the church. After retirement, Dan spent countless hours maintaining the church. He was a member of the Poland Lodge F&AM 766 and a 32 degree Mason of the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite Besides his wife of 60 years, the former Ruth Wietelmann, whom he married October 15, 1948, he leaves one daughter, Cynthia (Geoffry) Howard of Suffield, OH; four sons, Ray Smith of Miles City, MT, Dale Smith of Poland, Gary (Beth) Smith of Petersburg, and Scott Smith also of Poland; three grandchildren, Adam and Amy Howard, and Liz Bennett; and one great-grandson, Kalen Bennett. Besides his parents, Dan was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Kane. Funeral services will be Monday, 11:00 a.m. at the Faith Community Church, with Rev. Gary Marcy officiating. Friends will be received Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home Poland, and Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
