Clyde F. Gordon

October 5, 1930 — February 11, 2015

Struthers - Clyde F. Gordon, 84, entered into eternal rest Wednesday morning, February 11, 2015, with his loving family at his side.

Mr. Gordon was born October 5, 1930 in Warren, a son of William and Helen Langley Gordon. He came to Struthers as a young child and remained an active and dedicated resident until his passing.

Clyde, affectionately known as "Dink", was president of his 1949 Struthers High School graduating class, and attended Olivet College in Michigan on an academic/athletic scholarship. Upon returning home, he began working for the P&LE Railroad as a locomotive engineer until serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. He earned seven medals, including three Bronze Stars, for his meritorious service.

After being honorably discharged, he returned to Struthers. In July 1956, Mr. Gordon joined the Struthers Police Department, where he served with honor and integrity for the next twenty-eight years, retiring with the rank of Captain. After retirement, he initiated the Litter Prevention & Control Program in Struthers, worked in security at DeBartolo Corporation, and was a courier for ClinLab.

Clyde was past president of the Fraternal Order of Police and was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. He was also a member of the VFW Post No. 3538 and the Struthers Athletic Club. Mr. Gordon dedicated much of his free time to his love for sports. He was a youth baseball coach for many years, served as a football scout in the area for Notre Dame and the University of Kentucky, and was his grandchildren's biggest fan at their sporting events. He could captivate any audience with his artful story telling. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, and fishing.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His wife, the former Naomi R. Lavelle, whom he married October 20, 1951, preceded him in death on July 8, 2007. He is survived by his four daughters, Mary Beth (Dale) Gresko of Salem, Ann Kathryn "Katy" (Mark) Stevens of Struthers, Dr. Patricia (Dr. Robert Tamburro) Gordon of Elizabethtown, PA, and Susan Gordon of Youngstown; two sons, William (Margaret) Gordon of Peninsula, Ohio, and Matthew (Joan) Gordon of Canfield; eleven grandchildren, Brian (Jennifer) Stevens, Daniel Stevens; Robert, Margaret, and Clyde Tamburro; Alexander, Megan, Madison, and Kathryn Gordon; and Madelyn and Louis Gordon; great-grandson, Aiden Stevens; sister-in-law, Betty Jane Lavelle of New Middletown; and brother-in-law, William Garver of Columbiana. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian Keeler and Ruthanne Garver.

A prayer service will be held Monday at 10:15 a.m. at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Lowellville.

Family and friends will be received Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
