Clark C. White, Sr. 96 Educator and Coach Poland- Clark C. White, Sr., 96, expired on September 23, 2004 at Briarfield Manor. He was born June 29, 1908 in Muskingum County the son of Charles H. and Inez Hurrell White. He was married to Mildred L. Pfaff who preceded him in death in 1978. He received degrees from Ohio University, University of Pittsburgh, and Westminster College. A 41 year teaching career began in Greenford, Ohio. He then taught at Poland Seminary High School where he coached track and basketball from 1935 to 1943. His basketball teams compiled a 97-65 record in nine seasons. In 1938 his team won Polandâa�a��s first Mahoning County and District championships. Poland repeated as county champs in 1939 and 1942. and also took the 1942 Sectional championship. He coached six individual state track champions including one who also set national and state records in the discus. He also coached Poland to Mahoning County championships in softball in 1935 and 1936. He began Polandâa�a��s cross-country program in 1937 and developed the summer playground, tennis and softball programs. He was made a member of the Poland High School Athletics Hall of Fame in March of 1988. During World War II, he instructed Boysâa�a�� Physical Education at the YMCA as well as preinduction physical conditioning at Poland High School. He taught and was an administrator in Youngstown City Schools from 1943 to 1971 where he was principal of The Rayen School from 1962 to 1971. Upon his retirement, the Alumni Association and The Rayen School Trustees recognized him for meritorious service to The Rayen School. A resolution by the Youngstown City Council commending him was also presented. His career also included teaching in the Biology Department at Youngstown College. Mr. White was a member of the Poland Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder, member of Hillman Lodge 481 F. & A.M., Sons of the American Revolution. a Life member of the National Education Association, Secondary Principalsâa�a�� Association of Ohio, a member of the Northeastern Ohio Principalsâa�a�� Discussion Group, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Advisor to the Boy Scouts, Mill Creek Park Senior Citizens Golf League, Building and Zoning Inspector for Poland Village, Poland Duplicate Bridge Club, the Poland Masonic Breakfast Club and a past member of the North Side Kiwanis Club. His hobbies included sports, gardening, duplicate bridge, golf, and investing. He is survived by a brother John White of Cambridge, Ohio; two sons: Dr. C. Conner (Barbara) White, Jr. and Atty. David R. (Sally) White, Sr.; grandchildren: Jennifer (David) Comstock, Dr. Clark C. (Judy) White, III, J. Scott (Vicki) White, Major Steven J. (Christy) White., and Michael P. (Tessa) White. A grandson D. Robert White, Jr. preceded him in death. There are nine great grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at Poland Presbyterian Church at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday September 28, 2004. Friends may call one half hour before the service.
