Cortland-Chester "Chet" Clarke, 88, formerly of Poland, died on Sunday, June 21, 2015 in Lake Vista Care Center following an extended illness. He was born in Youngstown on July 23, 1926, raised in Austintown and was a 1944 graduate of Fitch High School. Chet went on to earn his bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University in 1947.
He began his retail career in 1948 with the GM McKelvey Corporation and went into business on his own in 1963 when he purchased Ted's Men's and Boy's Wear, where he was owner/operator for 10 years, when he moved his business to Boardman and opened Man Size, a big and tall men's store.
Chet was a life long member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a 50 years member of Four Square, and a member of Wick Lodge, F & AM.
He leaves his loving wife Elsie Johnson Clarke; his son Fred Clarke of Poland; his daughter, Karen Clarke (Randy Ferguson) of Cortland; grandchildren, Zachary (Amanda) Clarke of Lagrange, OH, Mallory Clarke of Columbus; great granddaughter, Emma Clarke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Genevieve Weeter Clarke; his sister, Genevieve H. Clarke; and his son-in-law, William May.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 12pm at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 North Main St. Poland, OH 44514, with the Rev. Jerry Krueger officiating. Burial will follow in Poland Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:30-11:45am on Wednesday in the funeral home.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, any memorial donations, be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St. Youngstown, OH 44503. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Lake Vista Care Center for the care and compassion they received over the last two years.
