Canfield - Charles H. Whitman, 96, of Boardman, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Shepherd of the Valley.

Born on March 3, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles and Ora (Haller) Whitman.

A proud graduate of South High School, Charles completed his studies in 1946 and worked alongside his parents in the family business, Whitman’s Food Market. At age 39, he made a career change when it was time for his parents to retire and entered the world of education. He initially graduated from Youngstown State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in education and began his teaching career at Boardman High School. During his five years at Boardman High School, where he taught Business and Distributive Education, he earned the affectionate nickname "Mr. DECA" (Distributive Education Clubs of America).

Charles was then offered a position at Youngstown State University in Career Services and earned his Master’s in counseling before being promoted to Director of Career Planning and Placement, upon the retirement of Mary B. Smith. A role he embraced for many years until his retirement. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he dedicated countless hours volunteering with various organizations. His leadership and dedication was evident during his time as past President and Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis Club, where he was a member for over 48 years. He also served as a retired executive for SCORE and as a board member for Ohio Living - Park Vista. He served on advisory committees for organizations including the Juvenile Court System, the Salvation Army, and the Boy Scouts. He was active in the South High Alumni Association serving as President over multiple years, and he generously contributed his time as a board member and delivery driver for Meals on Wheels, until age 90.

Charles received the Valley Legacy Award for Outstanding Senior, among other community awards recognizing his many years of community service. Charles was also celebrated for his remarkable singing talent. He held the position of choir director at several local Presbyterian churches, and shared his gift at the Jewish Temple, and lent his voice to numerous weddings. His involvement with the Youngstown Connection allowed him to share his passion for music with many.

Known affectionately as "Papa Cookie," Charles enjoyed sharing sweet treats with the community, often stopping to visit his great- grandchildren before delivering to the local Rescue Mission. He cherished his friendships and frequently gathered with them for breakfast at Bob Evans, where “Chucky” was known for his warmth and engaging personality.

Charles is survived by his children, Charles (Laurie) Whitman, Donald (Laura E.) Whitman, and Mollie (Denny Zimmet) Turner; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Irene Whitman, and his former wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Whitman.
