Charles W. Panter, 79 Elmhurst, IL- Charles W. (Chuck) Panter, 79, 841 North York Road, Elmhurst, IL 60126 died Sunday in Westlake Hospital. He was born November 3, 1925 in Struthers a son of James Walter Panter Sr. and Edna Allen, a descendent of Revolutionary War hero, Ethan Allen. He had lived in Cleveland, moving to Chicago and Wheaton in 1960. He was a 1941 graduate of Struthers High School and attended the former Youngstown College before enlisting in the Navy during WW II. He served as an Electrician Mate, First Class on the USS Halsey Powell. On March 20, 1945 the ship was 90 miles south of Japan when a kamikaze pilot struck the ship. He normally would have been in his bunk at that time, but he couldnâa�a��t sleep and went up to the deck. The plane struck the area where his bunk was located. Four of his best friends died in the attack. The ship was the first to enter Tokyo Bay. He returned from the war in 1946 and followed his father into the Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a welder. He left to return to Youngstown College studying business. He found his calling in sales when he was hired by the Burroughs Corp. where he soon became the top salesman. He then held the same honor for Arnold Business forms in Cleveland. In 1960 he founded Associated Data Forms in Oak Park, Illinois designing and printing business forms for many major companies as well as DuPage County. He owned the company for thirty years. He was an avid boater both in Illinois and at his second home in Florida. He was an enthusiastic Chicago Bears fan and, with friends from Struthers, attended the Kentucky Derby 44 times. Mr. Panter leaves three daughters, Patricia Ann (Anthony) Theophilos of Piedmont, California, Charlotte Grass of Greer, South Carolina and Bobbi Panter of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, Mildred Yost of Redding, Pennsylvania and Wanda Lou (Thomas) Young of Salem, Ohio; a brother James W. (Nancy) Panter Jr. of Villa Park, Illinois; one granddaughter, Wendy (Fraser) Coleman; two great grandsons, Fraser Jr. and Theo Coleman and his former wife Rita Morris Johnson. Friends may call Friday from 5-8 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland where services will be at 10 AM Saturday. Burial with military honors will be in Poland Riverside Cemetery.
