Poland - Charles E. Davies, Jr., 64, of Poland, died Thursday afternoon, May 19, 2011 at the Hospice House surrounded by his family.
Mr. Davies was born December 11, 1946 in Rochester, Pa, a son of the late Charles E. and Helen Quantz Davies, Sr.
He was a 1964 graduate of Aliquippa High School. Mr. Davies graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1968 with a bachelor's of science degree in metallurgical engineering. While at the University, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
In 1968, Mr. Davies started his career with J&L Steel as a technical service engineer until taking a position with LTV Steel in 1984. He worked for LTV Steel until 2000, where he received the LTV Steel General Manager's Award for being instrumental in problem solving and in building customer relations. He then worked for US Steel until his retirement in 2003.
He served with the United States Army Reserves from 1971 to 1977 and was a member of the VFW Post 1821 in Center Township, Pa.
Mr. Davies was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of New Middletown, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Youngstown, a 26 year member of the BPOE Elks Chapter 1221 in Aliquippa, and the Ukrainian National Association St. Nicholas Branch 120. His interests included fishing, sports, and vacationing with his family.
He leaves his wife, the former Betty J. Markulin, whom he married August 24, 1968; two sons, Michael E. (Sheri) Davies of Oak Ridge, NC and Matthew E. Davies of Pittsburgh; grandson, Zachary M. Davies of Oak Ridge, NC; brother, William E. (Barbara) Davies of State College, PA; and two godchildren, Alyssa and Christina Davies.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church of New Middletown with Pastor Larry Klinker officiating. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church.
