Poland - Charles F. Burkey, 89, of Poland, formerly of Struthers, died early Friday morning, November 6, 2015 at the Greenbriar in Boardman.
Charles was born December 17, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of Fred and Alverna Souder Burkey. He was raised in Youngstown and in 1942, Charles and his family made their home in Struthers where he lived most of his life.
Charles was a 1944 graduate of Struthers High School. Upon graduation he was inducted into the United States Army. He served in Company I, 109th Infantry in the European Theater. Charles was a Prisoner of War at Kriegsgefangenenlager Camp in Germany on February 26, 1945. He was liberated on March 28, 1945 and received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and one Bronze Battle Star.
After the war, Charles returned to Struthers. He married his wife of 67 years, the former Erna L. Runge on November 27, 1947. Together they worked at their family grocery store, Runge, Inc, in Struthers. Charles served as President until his retirement in 1987.
Charles attended Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers where he served on church council and played the organ. Recently, he attended St. Marks Lutheran Church in Boardman. He was a member of the Lutheran Men's Bowling League, sang in the Concordia Choras, and was a member of the Saxon Club. He was also a member of the Food Industry Association Executives, National Grocers Association, the Ohio Grocers Association, and president and C.E.O. of the Youngstown Area Grocers Association until his retirement from that position in 1992.
Charles leaves his wife, Erna of Poland; son, Charles (Margaret) Burkey II of Pulaski, PA; sister, Ruth Burkey of Poland; two grandchildren, Jill (Michael) Burt and Melissa (Caleb) Broerman; and two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Marley Burt.
Besides his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Burkey; daughter, Miriam Hamilton; and brother, Donald Burkey.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, with Pastor Paul Burgeson officiating.
Friends will be received Tuesday prior to the funeral from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
