Youngstown - Catherine A. Widener, 36, of Youngstown, died Monday morning, at her residence, after a short, but courageous battle with ALS.
Cathy was born July 23, 1976 in Youngstown, a daughter of Joseph and Claudia Sturtz Smolka.
A 1994 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, Cathy attended Youngstown State University and received her Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree. She worked for Mahoning County GIS Department and then as Assistant Director of Planning and Zoning for Boardman Township.
Cathy loved running, working out, and walking her dogs, Jazz and Ginger. Cathy loved animals and rescued many and lovingly brought them into her home. Next to running, Second Chance Animal Rescue was her other love, and she loyally volunteered weekends and for the annual fund raiser, Night at the Races.
Cathy leaves her husband, Jay, whom she married April 17, 2012; sister, Dawn Detz of Pittsburgh; two nieces, Alycia and Ashley Detz both of Darlington, PA; father and step-mother Joseph and Teresa Smolka of Liberty; sister, Carol Ann Smolka of Youngstown; father and mother-in-law, Clyde and Kathy Widener; brother-in-law, Jeff Widener of Shenango Township; mother, Claudia Sturtz of Youngstown; several aunts and uncles; and touched the lives of many beloved friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11:00 AM at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, Boardman. Friends will be received Friday from 5-8 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the Funeral Home.
