Catherine S. (Shelar) Dyer

January 18, 1919 — October 18, 2016

Austintown - Catherine S. Dyer, 97, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in the Humility House. She was born January 18, 1919 in Niles, daughter of the late Walter and Helen Holmes Shelar.

She was a 1937 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, where she was a member of the basketball team and swim team. Catherine retired from the Austintown Local Schools in 1982 following 15 years of employment. Catherine was a founding member of St. Christine Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown, where she was a board member of the Ladies Guild, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and a member of God's Footprints, the bereavement committee at St. Joseph's.

She leaves her children, John (Louise) Dyer of Liberty, Rev. Thomas P. Dyer of Sebring, Michael Dyer of Berlin Center, Helen M. Planey of New Middletown, Edward Dyer of Austintown, Suzanne (John) Jackson of Wellston, James Dyer of Jackson Twp., Janice Heaberlin of Austintown, Jeffrey (Janet) Dyer of New Middletown, Martin Dyer of Austintown, Timothy (Judy Murran) Dyer of Columbus and Kathleen (Michael) Cook of Austintown; 21 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Dyer on March 28, 1987; her siblings, Margaret Shisler, Virginia Welsh, Howard Shelar, Jean Holmes and Jack Shelar and her son-in-law, Michael R. Planey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 11am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4545 New Rd. Austintown, with her son the Rev. Fr. Thomas P. Dyer as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 4-7pm at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St. Boardman and prior to mass on Friday from 10-10:45am at the church.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Humility House and also to Hospice of the Valley for the wonderful care and compassion given to Catherine.

Flowers are beautiful, however the family asks that memorial donations be made, in her name, to Hospice of the Valley, 9803 Sharrott Rd. Poland, OH 44514.
