Caroline Nancy Smaldino, 83
Struthers - Caroline "Sweet Caroline" Nancy Smaldino, 83 of Struthers, Ohio, died September 6, 2011 at her residence after a long illness. Mrs. Smaldino was born November 11, 1927 in Youngstown a daughter of John and Nancy Costello.
She was a 1946 graduate of Youngstown East High School. Mrs. Smaldino was the owner operator of Smaldino's Family Restaurant in North Lima with her husband Paul for thirty five years. She was a member of St. Charles Church of Boardman.
She was widely known for never turning away anyone that was penniless or hungry.Her generosity was unsurpassed. Many travelers exiting the turnpike in need of food and without funds were assisted by her. To her family she was the wind beneath their wings. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, who along with her husband Paul took their children and their families on many wonderful vacations to Myrtle Beach. She was the heart and backbone of the family. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves her husband Paul whom she married November 25, 1948; two daughters, Paula (James) Visingardi of Poland, Angela (David) Pasquino of Summerville, SC; a son, Gary (Diane) Smaldino of Boardman; a nephew and niece, Tex and Nancy Matheney of Struthers; nine grandchildren, Laurie (Jeff) Dieter, Jimmy Visingardi, Ashley Visingardi, Anthony Visingardi, Tom Pavlich, Paul Pavlich, Jenna Smaldino, Mathew Smaldino, Mark Smaldino and two great-grandchildren, Ella Dieter and Audrey Dieter.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father,sisters, Phyliss Mali and Mary DeRamo and brothers, Julius Mike and Louis Costello.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Charles Roman Catholic Church in Boardman with Fr. Phillip Rogers officiating.
Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland where a prayer service will be held Friday at 10:15 a.m. prior to processing to church.
