Poland - Carol J. Prelog, of Poland, died early Tuesday morning at her residence.
Carol was born September 10, 1949 in Youngstown, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Yutches Surack.
A graduate of Wilson High School, Carol received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Commercial Advertising and Masters Degree in Fine and Performing Arts and Art Education from Youngstown State University. Two of her instructors were Tom McNickle and Mary Kay D'Isa. She studied water colors which she called "loose and free" art form, under Homer Hacker and also studied privately with Alice Overhauser in oil and china painting. Carol is also accomplished in pottery and photography, and worked as a professional photographer in Pennsylvania and New York after graduation. She also lived for a time in Washington State where she did a lot of wood carving
Returning to Poland, Carol was an art instructor for Brookfield School District for 17 years retiring in 2004. Carol also taught art from her own home, the Trumbull Art Gallery and the Butler Institute of American Art where she had a one woman show, an installation of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" Carol participated in numerous art shows including Annual Artist's Day in Poland, the 20th anniversary party for the Fred W. Green Memorial Garden Center, Garden Forum of the Greater Youngstown Area where she was a member and served as program chairman of the event. In 1987, Carol was chosen for the Women's Resource Center, Artist of the Month.
When not teaching Art, Carol loved taking her family to museums. She was a member of the Holy Family Church in Poland.
Carol leaves her husband, John Prelog, whom she married November 22, 1968; one daughter, Tracy (Jeremiah) Kornspan of Ravenna; one son, Troy Prelog of Lowellville; three sisters, Patricia (Jan) Margetko of North Lima, Mary Moore of Youngstown, and Christine (Travis) Adkins of Lima; one brother, Joseph (Pam) Surack of FL; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen (Ed) Bridges, Marge Benson, Juanita (Bill) Barber, Rose (Mike) Carson, Jim (Brenda) Prelog and Mike (Mary) Prelog; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her sister, Joanne Jennings and niece, Stephanie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Poland with Msgr. William Connell officiating. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery, Poland.
Friends will be received Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home Poland, where a Prayer Service will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
