Youngstown - Carl James Pechalk, 88, of Poland, formerly of Struthers, died Thursday afternoon at Essex One in Salem.
Carl was born December 5, 1922 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Stella Delvic Pechalk.
He was raised in Youngstown and was a 1940 graduate of East High School. Carl worked as a clerk for the Youngstown branch of the United States Postal Service for 36 years retiring in 1981.
A United States Army Air Corp veteran, Carl served in World War II, as a left gunner of a B29 Bomber in the 20th Airforce 497 Bomb Wing. He was stationed in Saipan and flew 31 missions over Toyko.
He was a member of Struthers VFW Post #3538, and a former member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. Carl played in the over 60's softball league and was an avid bowler with various bowling leagues.
Besides his wife, the former Theresa "Tess" Blefare, whom he married May 21, 1955; he leaves two daughters, Paget (Don) Stipanic of The Villages, FL and Carol (Ken) Filicky of Poland; one brother, Raymond Pechalk; two grandchildren, Paul Stipanic of CA, and Kyle Filicky of Poland.
Besides his parents, Carl is preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and Joseph Pechalk,
Funeral services will be held Sunday, 5:00 pm at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with Fr. Bernard Bonnot officiating.
Friends will be received Sunday from 3-5 pm at the funeral home.
