CAPT C. Alan Stephan, USNR (Ret) - 72 YOUNGSTOWN - C. Alan Stephan, 72, died Wednesday morning at his home. Capt. Stephan was born on March 21, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA, son of C. Albert & Elizabeth Mercilliott Stephan. He came to Youngstown in 1986. He was a 1952 graduate of Frankford High School in Philadelphia, and earned a B.A. in History and Biology from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, in 1957. Capt. Stephan served a distinguished 30-year career as an officer in the United States Navy. As a Naval aviator, he specialized in Anti-Submarine Warfare. His military career spanned both operational and personnel positions, culminating as Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Atlanta. He retired at the rank of Captain in 1986. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with a Gold Star and the Legion of Merit. Capt. Stephan devoted his retirement years in Youngstown to community service. In recognition of his many volunteer activities he was named YWCA Man of the Year in 1995. He served as chair of the Board of Directors of Hospice of the Valley and the Board of Trustees of both Planned Parenthood of Mahoning Valley and Park Vista Retirement Community. He also served on the boards of the YSU Federal Credit Union and the Akron/Canton Council, Navy League of the US. In 1999 he was appointed to the Financial Oversight Committee of the Youngstown City Schools by the governor of Ohio. He served on the YCS Board of Education and the Schools 2000 Strategic Planning Committee. Capt. Stephan was also a strong supporter of the arts. He recognized as a treasure of the Valley the Butler Institute of American Art where he served with dedication and enthusiasm as a docent since 1989. Capt. Stephan is survived by his wife, Dr. Sandra White Stephan, to whom he was married on March 18, 1961, two sons, Peter (Susan) Stephan of Oak Hill, VA, Daniel (Carolyn) Stephan of Fairfax, VA, his brother, Richard (Helen) Stephan of Philadelphia, PA, and three grandchildren, Grace, Brian, & Margaret. A memorial service will be held at the Butler Institute of American Art on Saturday, September 16, at 2:00 pm.
