Canfield - C. Ray Soccorsy, 93, died, on Monday, November 16, 2015 in Sunrise Health Center, with his family by his side. He was born in Youngstown on March 29, 1922 to the late, William and Mary Dominic Soccorsy and was a 1940 graduate of Youngstown South High School.
He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theatre of Operation. Ray trained with the 12th Armored "Mystery Division" and the Armored Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Campbell, KY.
Ray went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree from Youngstown College and his Master's Degree in Education from Westminster College. He took additional graduate work at Kent State University, the University of Illinois Urbana and the University of Arizona. Ray was a member of two National Honor Societies in Education. He was certified in teaching and administration for K-12 in Ohio, California, Florida and Arizona. He was employed as a teacher/administrator with Garrettsville and Nelson School Districts in Portage County, Mohave County School in Arizona, Jennings High in Akron, Adams School in Youngstown and was Superintendent of the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities from 1976-1985, serving 14 school districts.
Ray was employed as an instructor in the Special Education Department at Y.S.U and greatly enjoyed the opportunity and privilege of working with gifted, average, mentally handicapped, visually, hearing and physically impaired children and adults over the years. He received recognition as an honored guest at the 77th Annual Columbus Day Celebration for outstanding achievements in the field of education in 1973. Throughout his years in the field of Education, he participated actively in various professional conferences and panels for exceptional children and workshops.
He was a member of the Youngstown Knights of Columbus, Youngstown Lions Club, Italian American War Veterans Post #3 and the Youngstown American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Sharpe Soccorsy on April 5, 2011; three brothers and their spouses, Anthony and Antoinette Soccorsy, Amato "Matt" and Josephine Soccorsy and Henry "HP" and Frances Amedia Soccorsy; as well as his sister and her husband, Marie and Jim Byrd.
He leaves his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 12pm at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St. Struthers, with Chaplains Pat and Ken Goss officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 2-5pm and prior to the service on Sunday from 11-11:45am at the funeral home. Interment will take place on Monday at Lake Park Cemetery.
