Burton J. “Jack” Smith, 88, of North Canton passed away on December 7, 2016 at the home of his sister, Alcey Smith Shultz.
He was born in Poland, Ohio on July 30, 1928 to the late Laurabelle Stewart and Burton H. Smith. He graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1946 and went on to receive a BA from Youngstown College. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952, and in the reserves from 1954-1956. Jack was in industrial sales and then fasteners for many years before becoming the owner of the Red Wing Shoe Store in North Canton.
He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, North Canton, where he was very involved, primarily with the ushers.
Jack was a 50+ year charter member of the Poland Masonic Lodge #766.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife June on Aug. 8, 2008,whom he married in April 1960. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Olive “Sis” Smith Brewster; and brother-in-law, John H. “Jack” Shultz.
He is survived by his sister, Alcey Smith Shultz of Poland; brother-in-law, Robert D. Brewster Sr.; niece, Dr. Leigh Brewster; nephew, Robert D. Brewster Jr.; nephew, Richard Von Kaenel; and niece, Jill Hawkins.
A committal service will be held at 12:00PM January 5, 2017 at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Goshen Township, Ohio.
