Bernadine C. Sokol

Bernadine C. Sokol, age 92, of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

Born on May 16, 1932 in Struthers, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Katherine (Finnick) Hawk.

Bernadine had a zest for life that began in her early years, attending Struthers High School where she forged lasting memories. On a fateful day in January 1949, she married her beloved husband, John Allen Sokol, Sr., embarking on a journey of love and partnership that spanned 29 years until his passing in 1978. 

As a devoted member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, she found a community that supported her faith and values until the church's closure. Throughout her life, Bernadine exhibited a creative flair, often seen crocheting a variety of creations that she lovingly shared with her family. Her enjoyment of word search puzzles was a favorite pastime, a testament to her inquisitive nature and love for a challenge. 

Bernadine also took great pride in caring for her family's resting places at St. John's the Baptist Church Cemetery and Calvary Cemetery, a task she approached with tenderness and attention to detail. 

She is survived by her son, John (Suzanne) Sokol, Jr. of Kinsman, Ohio, and her cherished grandchildren, Lisa Chapman, Jennifer Sokol, and Stephanie Sobeck. Additionally, her legacy continues with her great-grandchildren, John Chapman, Harley Chapman, Alexander Sobeck, Amy Sobeck, and Oliver Lebo, as well as her great-great-granddaughter, Savannah Chapman. 

Bernadine was preceded in death by her daughter, Bernadine Seman; her sisters, Eleanor Pruce, Dorothy DeBelyak, Delores Ackworth, and Marian Hawk; as well as her great- grandson, David Chapman; and great- granddaughter, Samantha Sobeck. 

Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 6, 2025, at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St. Struthers, Ohio 44471 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a continuation on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, starting at 9:30 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
