Sherrodsville- Benjamin P. Davies, 87, died Thursday morning, March 20, 2014 at Aultman Hospital in Canton.
Benjamin was born May 15, 1926 in Brownsville, PA., a son of Benjamin S. and Helen Garwood Davies.
He was raised in Youngstown and attended South High School where he graduated in 1944. After graduation Ben worked transporting Ore on the Great Lakes until enlisting in the United States Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific and served on a landing craft in Japan transporting troops and equipment into Okinawa. Ben also unloaded ships and hauled them to the beaches. At the end of the war, Ben hauled troops into Japan to finish the war and he was honorably discharged in 1946.
Returning home, Benjamin was accepted to Muskingum College, starting in the fall of 1946 and graduated in 1950. After graduation, Ben started with an office job in the trucking business and eventually, bought The Mahoning Express Company which he later moved to Mineral Ridge, for parking and warehouse space. In the 1980's, after 30 years, and with the steel mills closing, Ben decided to sell his business, retire, and move to Maryland.
Ben was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canfield.
On April 25, 1953, Ben married the love of his life, the former Joyce Wallis, and they settled in Atwood Lake until her death January 1, 1997.
Besides his parents and wife, Ben was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Rerry; brother, Harmon Davies; and stepmother, Edna Cox.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, 10:00 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland with Pastor Robert Butterfield officiating. Interment will follow at the Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
Friends will be received Sunday from 5-7 PM at the funeral home.
