Poland - Barbara Arnold Allen, 94, died at her home on Thursday evening, September 20, 2012.
She was born in Youngstown on June 26, 1918, the daughter of John J. and Helen Jones Arnold. She graduated from Struthers High School in 1936 and attended the Ohio State University. In 1939, Barbara married Robert W. Allen who preceded her in death in December of 2002.
She was a homemaker but spent her life enjoying oil painting and watercolors. She was a member of the Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society and taught adult education oil painting classes at the YMCA in Youngstown as well as at Poland High School. She had shown at the Butler Institute of American Art, the Youngstown Playhouse and at local art shows. She was a Girl Scout leader for one of the first troops in Poland as well as a Cub Scout Den Mother.
She was a member of the Columbiana Chapter of Eastern Star. She loved square dancing throughout her life and was a member of the Duck and Dive and the Ball and Chain square dancing clubs. As an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she served on the Board of Trustees, was a Deacon and an Elder. She was a member of the Leighninger Class for over 50 years and worked on the church's used book sale for 40 years and was its chairman for 12 years.
She leaves behind three children, John (Tara) Allen of Mt. Dora, FL, Susan Mikelonis of Palm Harbor, FL, and Daniel (Peggy) Allen of Sarasota, FL; five grandchildren, Scott Allen, Wendy Oliverio, Kathy Allen, and Laurie Reed, all of Florida and Matthew Mikelonis of California; and five great-grandsons, Zachary Allen, Nicholas and Spencer Oliverio, and Breighton and Emmerson Reed, all of Florida.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Suzanne Arnold.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Thursday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Lake Park Cemetery.
