Campbell - Antonio Rivera, 73, of Campbell, died Friday afternoon, March 21, 2014 at his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Rivera was born December 22, 1940 in Puerto Rico, a son of the late Benigno and Emilia Cruz Rivera. Antonio's mother passed away when he was an infant and he was raised by his maternal grandparents, Juan Cruz and Maria Arroyo. In 1956, Antonio came to New York City and later to Campbell in 2003.
Mr. Rivera worked as a doorman for JH Taylor Management in New York City for 32 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of Christian Missionary Church in New York City and a current member of Cristianos Unidos Church in Campbell. Mr. Rivera was dedicated to the church and traveled as a missionary doing much work over the years.
While living in Campbell, Antonio enjoyed cutting his grass and planting his garden, something he didn't get to do in New York City. He also loved music, particularly playing his guidro instrument and singing.
He leaves his wife, the former Gladys Oquendo, whom he married November 17, 1961; daughters, Raquel Rivera of Struthers and Sonia (David) Santos of Roselle, NJ; sons, Miguel (Brenda) Rivera of Campbell and Tomas (Brenda) Rivera of Union, NJ; 13grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Rivera was preceded in death by a daughter, Irene; and grandson, Antonio Nathaniel Rivera.
Funeral services will be held in New Jersey followed by burial in Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, NJ.
