Anne Marie Sole, 76 Poland- Anne Marie Sole, 76, of 2150 Manor Ave. died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Mrs. Sole was born May 24, 1926 in Girard, a daughter of James and Philomena Zuppo, and was raised in Girard and also resided in Youngstown before moving to Poland in 1951. In 1942, at the age of sixteen, Mrs. Sole graduated from Girard High School, where she was active in the Art Club and contributed extensive illustrations for her yearbook. She was enthusiastic about photography and carried her trusty Brownie camera everywhere, capturing friends and family in candid shots. As a young woman, she worked at the Mahoning Country Club; the Ravenna Arsenal; the Civil Air Patrol, where she was a volunteer; and the Miller Direct Mail Service through which she met her husband, Frank Sole. Together, they were charter members of the Youngstown Photographic Society, where she was a charter secretary. In the 1950s, Mr. Sole was recalled to active duty, and she joined him at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton where she was a clerk on the base. They returned to Poland Township after Mr. Soleâa�a��s service discharge, and she began a long career as a homemaker and community volunteer Mrs. Sole was very active in a host of community organizations, including Camp Fire Girls and the Struthers PTA. In the 1960s she was instrumental in helping to pass the 10-mil operating levy for the Struthers schools, and it is still in place today. She also worked out of her home, baking and decorating cakes for special occasions and gained a following so large with her delicious creations that she had to retire her enterprise. She also worked closely with Dr. George Dixon in creating and implementing the Struthers Beautification Committee, promoting gardening and community pride. This experience set the stage for Mrs. Soleâa�a��s love of gardening. In recent years, Mrs. Sole was known locally as the âa�A"Herb Ladyâa�A� using her creativity and love of gardening to present workshops and lectures at Inglis Greenhouse, the Youngstown Public Library and various church groups and bookstores. She had been a member of the Holburne Herb Growers Guild and was instrumental in developing and planting the Herb Gardens at Boardman Park. Her husband supported his wifeâa�a��s activities at the park by designing the Gardenâa�a��s trellises. She was a 35-year member of the Boardman United Methodist Church where she was also a member of the Dorcas Circle. She was a former member of the International Institute of Youngstown and supported the areaâa�a��s ethnic origins. She was even honored as a member of the Native American Society for her work promoting Native American culture. Mrs. Sole generously volunteered her talents for a variety of youth organizations and day camps over the years. A passionate promoter of the arts, she enjoyed the Kenley Players and the Youngstown Symphony. She was a member of the Friends of American Art at the Butler Institute, the Womenâa�a��s Auxiliary of Postal Workers, the C.B.I. Veterans Association and the Auxiliary of the Mahoning Valley Industrial Management Association. Her husband Frank Sole whom she married November 20, 1948 died March 9. Mrs. Sole leaves a daughter, MariLouise Sole of Struthers; two sons, Fred Sole of Poland, Frank Sole of Youngstown and two granddaughters Sarah and Julie Sole. She was the last surviving member of her family, which included a sister, Sandella Zuppo; a brother Michael Zuppo, two stepbrothers, Anthony and John Zuppo and a step-sister Josephine Zuppo preceded her in death. Friends may call Monday from 5-8 PM at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers and Tuesday from 10:00 until 10:45 AM at the church There will be funeral services 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Soleâa�a��s name to Angels for Animals or her family members to create a public herb garden in her memory
