Boardman - Anna A. "Mitzi" Furgan, 91, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley on West Blvd.
Anna was born June 17, 1923 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Novosel) Garasic.
She was a 1940 graduate of Scienceville High School and later worked at MacKenzie Muffler Co. where she met the love of her life, Stephen J. Furgan. They were married on August 25, 1945 at Sacred Heart Church in Youngstown. Mr. Furgan preceded her in death on June 12, 1974.
Anna was a dedicated homemaker and also worked as a custodial worker for the Youngstown Board of Education in the main office, then for Paul C. Bunn School, and retired from the William B. Pollock Co.
Mrs. Furgan was a member of New Life Assembly of God in Poland. She loved to sing and was in the church choir in the 1980's. Anna loved the Lord and read her Bible daily.
She was proud of her Croatian heritage and loved tamburitza music. Anna was a member of the American Croatian Citizens Club and St. George Croatian Lodge No. 66.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Carol Yarwick, with whom she made her home, Monica (William) Meehan of Lowellville, and James P. (Kathleen) Furgan of Boardman; three grandchildren whom she adored, Lesley (Jason) Reed of Worthington, James S. Furgan and Lauren M. Furgan, both of Boardman; a great-granddaughter due in January of 2015; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Anna was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, Stephen, Frank, and John Garasic; sisters, Mary Schiavone, Rose Miller, and Katherine and Dorothy Garasic; and son-in-law, Gregory Yarwick.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Lowellville.
Family and friends will be received on Monday from 4-7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Furgan's name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
Mrs. Furgan's family would like to thank the staff of the Mill Creek Trail Wing at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman for the wonderful care they gave to Anna during her stay with them.
