Canfield - Andrew J. Stavich, 88, of Canfield, went up to see the "Big Guy" December 29, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Stavich was born November 9, 1922 in Campbell, a son of Steve and Anna Gregorich Stavich.
He was a 1940 graduate of East High School. In June of 1943, he was inducted in the United States Army proudly serving during World War II in China, Burma, and India with the 1790th Engineer Service Team. Achieving the rank of Technician Fifth Grade, he was honorably discharged in February of 1946.
Upon returning from the war, along with his brothers, he co-founded Campbell Sash Works in 1946. They later founded Calex Corporation in Campbell in 1952 and Stavich Enterprises Inc. in 1992.
Throughout his life, he was a generous benefactor helping many people throughout the community. Among some of his benefactor work included, maintaining the Stavich Bike Trail that connects Lowellville and New Castle that his brother John created, co- establishing with his brother, George, both a nursing scholarship in memory of his sister, Donna Stavich-McCabe, and the Stavich Educational Fund at Youngstown State University. He also co-created the Stavich Family Educational Fund, which provided saving bonds to children in the Campbell School System and building a science and computer lab for the Campbell School System. Mr. Stavich also set up a program, where he provided the China-Burma-India publication to any veteran that subscribed to it. He made many other charitable contributions, many to the city of Campbell and its School Systems.
Mr. Stavich enjoyed traveling around the world, going on approximately 60 cruises over the years, the last being in 2008 to Alaska to give his daughter away in marriage on a glacier. An animal lover and outdoorsman, he loved tending to his family farm. He enjoyed gardening and always made sure he shared his crop with family, friends, and the community. Mr. Stavich also enjoyed reading the paper and doing crossword puzzles daily, keeping up on world events and good conversation with family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Andrea (Kevin) Green-Williams of Canfield; son, A.J. Green of Poland; a grandson, Andrew Joseph Williams; sister, Mary Brown of Youngstown; five nieces, Alice (Edward) Stavich-Klempay of Canfield, Carol (Roger) Burnard of Maple Valley, WA, Margaret Stavick of Poland, Pamela Stavick of Worcester, MA, and Donna Stavick of Youngstown; and a nephew, John Hoza of Earlysville, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers, Nicholas, Steve, John, and George Stavich; and two sisters, Dorothy Hoza and Col. Donna McCabe.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown with military honors to be provided.
Family and friends will be received Sunday from 2-5 p.m. and Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
