COLUMBUS-Alma Jones Thompson, 95, passed away April 21, 2017 at home.
Born July 10, 1921 in Mardy, South Wales, Alma was the only child of Evan Hughes and Elizabeth Johns Jones. She celebrated her first birthday on an ocean liner on the way to the USA. Her family landed in New York on July 13, 1922 and immigrated to Youngstown, OH.
She graduated from Youngstown South High School in 1939. She married Edward Carl Thompson, Sr. on August 25, 1940. Alma and Ed also lived in Boardman and Canfield, OH. They moved to Upper Arlington, OH to be with family in June of 2003.
Alma and Ed were members of Boardman United Methodist Church for over 65 years. Alma was a charter member and the third president of the Calon Lan Welsh Club (organized in 1950), a former member of the Boardman Tennis and Swim Club, Monthly Book Review, and several bridge clubs.
Alma and Ed were fortunate to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on August 25, 2005. They loved to travel and were able to travel throughout the US and 25 countries including Europe and Africa.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ed on November 1, 2005 and their beloved daughter, Joan Elizabeth Ewing, who passed away on May 16, 1997.
Alma leaves her son, Edward "Ted" (Pamela) of Columbus, OH; son, John Evan of Lancaster, CA; grandchildren, Airman First Class Edward C. Thompson, III of McGuire AFB, NJ, Elizabeth C. Thompson at Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH, Lauren Ewing (Daniel) Luce of Winter Garden, FL, and Jessica E. (Jeff) Haney of Palm Dale, CA.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
