Alfred A. Boggia, 90
LOWELLVILLE - Alfred A. Boggia, 90, died Friday evening at the Hospice House.
He was born July 20, 1924, in Lowellville, a son of Michael and Mary Farina Boggia.
Alfred was a 1942 graduate of Lowellville High School, where he was a football and baseball standout. He received his Bachelors in Education at Youngstown College, where he played baseball for Dom Rosseli, earning his BS in Education.
He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Guidance and Administration from Westminster College.
Alfred taught art at Mohawk Schools 37 years, retiring in 1991. He was a Head Football Coach at Mohawk for 10 years. He also was Jr. Varsity Coach and Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach. He was player manager of Youngstown Class AA Leagues and manager of the Lowellville Falcon Foundry Class B League in baseball. He served as Head Coach of the Youngstown Hardhats for nine seasons, with a 64-16 overall mark, and Mid-Atlantic League Crowns in both 1977 and 1978, garnering Coach of the Year. He also served as Head Coach at Lowellville High School, Assistant Football Coach at Campbell Memorial High School, Mahoning Valley Football All-Stars in 1987, Assistant Coach at Kennedy Christian, and Assistant Coach at Rayen High School. He was a member Mahoning Valley Coaches Association, American Legion Post 247, Lowellville Mt. Carmel Society, and served as Councilman for the Village of Lowellville.
Al was inducted in the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame, Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame and the Baseball Old Timers Hall of Fame.
He also enjoyed gardening, horse races, reading, and watching his grandchildren¹s sporting events.
He was a member of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church.
Alfred was a veteran of the U.S. Army, during World War II, serving with the European Theatre, where he received a unit citation for Ardennes Battle (Belgium Bulge). He also received the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and Victory Medal.
His wife, the former Ida M. Butch, whom he married Nov. 21, 1953, died July 19, 2009.
He is survived by four daughters, Mary Beth (Rick) Partika of Poland Township, Lisa Perry, Kelly (Ed) Tkach, and Jeanne (Joe) DePasquale, all of Lowellville; two sons, Alfred A. (Tonya) Boggia Jr. and Robert Boggia of Lowellville; one brother, Mike (Josephine) Boggia of Hubbard; and 10 grandchildren, Marisha, Bryan, and Katarina Partika, Jimmy Perry, Geno and Giavanna Tkach, Joey and Paolo DePasquale, and Antonina and Antonio Boggia.
Besides his parents and wife, Alfred was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael; one brother, Louis Boggia; two sisters, Rose (Angelo) Zarlingo and Mamie (Patsy) Melillo; and one son-in-law, James Perry.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of Hampton Woods, St.
Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, and Hospice of the Valley.
A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 244 McGill St., Lowellville, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at the Holy Rosary Church at 10 a.m.
Friends and family will be received Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
