Boardman - Alexander "Sandy" Balog, 98, died Tuesday, December 8, 2015 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 12, 1917 in Youngstown, son of the late Joseph and Susanna Bennedek Balog.
He was a graduate of Wilson High School and proudly served in the United States Navy as a SeaBee in the Construction Batallion and the 138th Maintenance Battalion during WWII. Alexander was employed as a Trea Bon Engineer for over 40 years at US Steel. Following his retirement he worked at Johnson Construction. He was a member of the First Hungarian Presbyterian Church, a 32nd Degree member of the Sulgrave Masonic Lodge #696, the Aut Mori Grotto where he was also involved with the Old Timers. He served with the Grotto Clowns, as Sandy the Clown, visiting children's hospitals and volunteering extensively. He enjoyed cooking, boxing, taking long drives, woodworking, gardening, poetry and reading. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his son, Ted Balog of Youngstown; daughter, Geraldine Perno of Boardman; sister, Gizella Varkonda of Boardman; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Margaret R. Balog on September 4, 2011; his brother, Joseph Balog, sisters, Mary Bathory and Betty Catlos.
Services will be Monday at 1:30pm at the Lake Park Cemetery Chapel.
