Alex Nick Vafides

Boardman - Alex N. Vafides, 93, died February 3, 2023, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by family.

Alex was born January 18, 1930 in Katerini, Greece, a son of the late Efthimios and Olga Rafilides Vafides, and moved to Canton, Ohio at the age of 16.

After graduating from Timken High School in 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Baltimore until being honorably discharged in 1955, with the rank of Electrician's Mate Second Class. Returning to Canton, Alex began his career with Ohio Bell as a lineman. While working on a job site, he met LaVerne Johanson, and they were married on June 2, 1957. Later promoted to a management position, Alex and his family relocated to Boardman, Ohio, where he worked for the company until retiring at the age of 52.

In retirement years, Alex and LaVerne enjoyed spending summers at their cottage in Cape Cod, where Alex enjoyed the scenery, fishing, golfing, and playing cards with friends.

Alex leaves to carry on his memory, his wife LaVerne; daughters, Terri (Phil) Desing of Arlington, VA, Cynthia Vafides of Boardman, OH, Sonya (Chris) Dionisio of Canton, OH; siblings, Jean Matinides of Louisville, OH and Harry (Irene) Vafides of Marlborough, MA; grandchildren, Nicole, Andrew (Ashley) and Peter Desing, and Victoria, Jason, and Dominic Dionisio; great-grandchild, Harper Desing; brother-in-law, Arthur (Sue) Johanson of Demascus, OH; sister-in-law, Betty McGirr of Fostoria, OH; and a host of special nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

A private memorial service was held at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman.
