Alex Carchedi, 89 Lowellville- Alex Carchedi, 89,died early Monday morning at his residence. He was born in Filadelfia Calabria, Italy September 23, 1914, a son of Vito and Maria Denisi Carchedi. He came to the Lowellville in 1934. Following the war he married and resided in Massachusetts for 7 years before returning to Lowellville, Mr. Carchedi was a veteran of the United States Army during WWII, having served in the Pacific at New Guinea, on a Regimental Combat Team, where he received a Bronze Star and various other combat medals. He was operator of the Open Hearth Narrow-Gauge Engine at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube (LTV), retiring in 1978. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 247 , Struthers VFW Post# 3538, Lowellville Senior Citizens, and the Mt. Carmel Society. He was also a member of the Holy Rosary Church. Mr. Carchedi was a devout Catholic and family man, who loved gardening , enjoyed making wine and visiting Italy. He leaves his wife, the former Nicolina Malacaria, whom he married December 20,1944; one daughter, Barbara Hutchinson of Shrewsbury, MA; two sons, Vito (Donna) Carchedi of Struthers and Ted (Mary Jo) Carchedi of Poland and; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Robert Pushkar of Wakefield, MA. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Pushkar; two brothers, Vito and Francesco Carchedi; and two sisters, Maria Carchedi and Antonia Serraino. Funeral services will be Thursday 9:30 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Lowellville and 10:00 AM at the Holy Rosary Church. Friends may call Wednesday from 5-8PM at the funeral home.
