Poland - Alan G. Deeley, 81, of Poland, Ohio, died Friday evening, June 28, 2013.
Alan was born May 21, 1932 in Youngstown, a son of the late H. Alan and Marguerite Duncan Deeley.
A graduate of Liberty High School, Alan attended Youngstown College before serving in the United States Navy Dental Corps during the Korean Conflict. After the war, Alan returned to the area and graduated from Ohio State University School of Dental Technology.
Alan's career began in his father's dental laboratory in downtown Youngstown in 1946 as a delivery boy after school.
He spent several years as a Certified Dental Technician before beginning scientific research in 1962 in the field of treating the edentulous patient.
In 1972, he began training dentists and technicians throughout the United States and Canada. His efforts were geared towards promoting patient care programs.
He holds several patents for dental occlusions and custom teeth design. His work has been aired on ABC, NBC, and CBS in their health segments and his work has appeared in various publications including Readers Digest.
Past President of the Ohio State Dental Laboratory Guild, Alan received the Richard Redd award for his contributions and educational expertise to the dental laboratory industry. The guild was a state component of the National Association of Dental Laboratories and Alan was presented the Merit award for his contributions to a study and report of Denturists practices in Canada.
Alan was contributing editor to Inside Dental Technology dental magazine, Peer Review Committee for IDT magazines, and co-author of Dental Economics magazine article.
A 50 year member of Toastmasters International, Alan was past president of Executive Toastmasters #408. Alan was recognized many times for his leadership and support of the organization's members. He was a member of the William Farr Lodge F & AM and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite.
Alan was a dedicated and active member of the Poland United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous committees.
A loyal Buckeye fan and a NASCAR fan, Alan remembered early NASCAR races at the Canfield Speedway in the early 1950's.
Alan leaves his wife, the former June Gerlach, whom he married June 2, 1962; his brother, James D. (Elvira) Deeley of Athens, GA; and nieces, Marguerite of Evans, GA., and Elizabeth of San Francisco, CA.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland with Pastor Michael Grant officiating. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Wednesday from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the funeral home.
Alan's family request any memorial contributions take the form of the Poland United Methodist Church Enrichment Fund or the Food Pantry, 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, Poland OH, 44514 or to donate blood in Alan's name to the American Red Cross.
